Caring for Sensitive Skin

“Sensitive skin” is a vague term: It can be defined as that which easily develops irritation or allergic reactions to skin products. And the symptoms vary -- some patients may feel itching or burning even without visible changes in the skin.

Luckily, there are plenty of skin-care products designed for sensitive skin that are free of harsh ingredients. Soaps contain detergents that can irritate the skin in some patients, whereas sensitive-skin washes use non-soap cleansers, which are a milder alternative. They are less acidic and frequently contain more moisturizing agents, so they can remove dirt and oil without irritating the skin.

Sensitive-skin moisturizers typically contain as few ingredients as possible, thereby minimizing potential irritation. Preservatives are needed to maintain freshness, but the least allergenic ones are used. Non-chemical sunscreens may be included, such as zinc or titanium. Finally, soothing elements such as aloe vera are added to reduce potential irritation.
