Will Your Halloween Treats Make You Break out?
By Dr. Josh Zeichner | Monday, October 17, 2011
Your mom has probably always told you that eating too much chocolate will make you get pimples, but is it really true? In 2009, a large study published in the International Journal of Dermatology evaluated which foods actually lead to breakouts.
- Dairy: Convincing data showed that dairy products can increase your risk for developing acne. Study subjects with high milk intake were more likely to develop acne than those with less milk in their diet. Why? It’s believed that dairy can influence your hormones: An increase in certain hormones can lead to higher production of oil in the skin, which can block pores and allow bacteria to grow. Eventually, this can lead to inflammation, making acne worse. This discovery is extremely important to men and women who’s skin is already naturally more oily.
- Sugary foods: These were also shown to be associated with acne. So be careful eating all that candy corn!
And as for chocolate and salty foods? The jury’s still out. So for now, sorry, mom.
